What is Engineered Stone and What is it Best For?

Engineered Stone is a composite material comprising crushed stone, typically quartz, bound together using a polymer resin. Best known for its application in kitchen countertops and bathroom vanities due to its durability and aesthetic appeal.

Engineered Stone offers a non-porous surface resistant to scratches, stains, and heat, while its wide range of colours and designs allows for versatile customisation. Furthermore, it’s an eco-friendly option, utilising waste stones that would otherwise be discarded.

The Benefits of Using Engineered Stone For Tiling

Engineered Stone boasts an impressive array of benefits.

  1. Durability: Engineered stone is highly resilient and stands up well to daily wear and tear, making it excellent for high-traffic areas.
  2. Stain Resistance: The non-porous nature of engineered stone means it resists staining better than natural stone, maintaining its pristine look for years.
  3. Design Versatility: With a wide array of colours and designs, engineered stone offers endless customisation possibilities, fitting any interior décor.
  4. Maintenance Ease: Engineered stone requires minimal upkeep, just a quick wipe down can keep it looking new, unlike natural stones which need regular sealing.
  5. Eco-Friendly: The use of waste stones in its manufacture makes engineered stone an environmentally friendly option, reducing mining of new materials and waste in landfills.

FAQs

Tiling is a significant investment, and making the right choices is critical. To help narrow your choices, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about tiling services.

Area of installation: The size of the area is a significant factor, as the larger the area, the more materials and labour will cost.

Selection of tile: Each tile has a different cost of installation, but when there are patterns involved with the tiles selected (e.g., subway tiles-brick bond, Travertine-French pattern), the cost of installation may be higher.

Waterproofing: This is an extremely important stage (when required), especially in bathrooms or wet areas. Cost factors vary depending on the size of the wet areas, how many internal and external corners there are, amount of taps, shower heads or pipes.

Sand and cement bed screed: The cost depends on the floor’s substrate; different substrates might use different materials inside or under the sand and cement bed. The thickness of the screed plays a factor as well; the thicker the screed, the more material is used to add up the cost, and the thinner the screed will decrease the cost.

Grout and Silicone selection: Various types of grouts and silicone can be used, but each tile or stone has its compatible grout or silicone, e.g., epoxy grout is roughly 4-5 times more expensive than regular grout as epoxy grout is stain resistant, non-porous and highly durable and the installation would increase the cost as the process takes considerably more precautions and finesse.

Access to the site: This can impact the labour side if access is a bit tricky, causing the job to take longer than possible

Sydney’s climate is quite diverse, with hot summers and mild winters. The types of tiles that work best under these conditions are often those that can withstand extreme temperatures and are resistant to humidity. At Symmetrical Tiling, we recommend porcelain, vitrified tiles, and engineered and natural stones. However, with proper sealing, any type of tile can resist moisture.
